Not a lot of flash, just substance

October 30, 2008

A RECENT endorsement for Rep. Bill Pascrell Jr., D-Paterson, came from an unexpected place: Esquire magazine.

In an election feature that included short endorsements in every congressional race in the nation, Esquire praised Pascrell for his low profile:
"Know why you've never heard of Bill Pascrell? Because he's been ignoring you and the rest of the world in favor of his constituents."

Return Lautenberg, Pascrell to Washington

October 28, 2008

For decades, New Jersey has been ably served by two proud sons of Paterson: Sen. Frank R. Lautenberg and Rep. Bill Pascrell, Jr. Through the years, the two Democrats have displayed a steadfast commitment to the issues and concerns that affect their constituents most, including the environment, public transportation and public and higher education. Both men provide consistent, effective constituent services.

Help head trauma victims

October 18, 2008

Traumatic brain injuries have long been a daunting medical problem suffered by some 1.4 million people a year after car crashes, sports accidents and other mishaps. Now the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have added many thousands more to the rolls of those with head injuries.

Disclosure on campus fires

August 23, 2008

It's been eight years since three freshmen died when a fire swept through their floor at a Seton Hall dorm. Another 58 students were injured, some severely. That tragedy caused university officials across the nation to take inventory of fire safety measures and get a handle on just how much of a problem fires posed on their campuses.

Pascrell: Afghanistan focus of war on terror ; Lawmaker visits bases, North Jersey troops

17 April 2008

The real battle against terrorism is being fought in Afghanistan and nearby parts of Pakistan, not in Iraq, Rep. Bill Pascrell said Wednesday after returning from a weekend trip to the region with colleagues.

The trip included staying at front-line bases and meeting the Pakistani prime minister, Yousaf Raza Gilani.

A right to chemical security

December 19, 2007

The Department of Homeland Security says New Jersey's tough chemical security law doesn't conflict with the federal government's less ambitious program to protect facilities using dangerous chemicals from terrorists - for now.

But the department is intent on having the authority to make changes in New Jersey or any other state if it thinks a state law might impede Washington's regulations. Congress must approve legislation to make sure the department cannot do so.

A great day for the Great Falls ; House OKs designation as national park

23 October 2007

The House of Representatives on Monday approved a bill designating the Great Falls a national park.

The action followed an emotional debate during which Rep. Bill Pascrell Jr., D-Paterson, drew from Alexander Hamilton's legacy and Paterson's industrial heyday.

"This is a home run!" an elated Pascrell said Monday evening. "This is a big one for Paterson, the Falls, the whole district."

When out-of-towners visit Brian LoPinto, the Empire State Building isn't the first place he takes them.

Instead, his sightseeing excursions begin in his hometown, at the 77-foot waterfalls that pound into the Passaic River and once brought this faded industrial hub power and glory.

Democrats no longer scare Wall Street

9 October 2007

Ordinarily the attitude on Wall Street at the approach of an election that promises a Democratic landslide is a bit like it must have been in ancient Rome in 410 AD as the Visigoths under Alaric approached the city gates intent on sacking the place. Fear and loathing were the order of the day in old Rome. And normally they are on Wall Street, too, as Democrats clamber over the barricades.

Exceprt: "How to Advance in Congress: Networking. Luck. And Money Doesn't Hurt."

No one seemed to work harder to secure a committee post than Rep. Bill Pascrell Jr. in his quest for a seat on the Ways and Means Committee.

No New Jersey Democrat had served on the committee since 1992. So, with a relentless approach reminiscent of LBJ, Pascrell fished unsuspecting members from the House floor and took them to a balcony off the speaker's lobby to press his case.
